WCPS nominates Crestomere School teacher Heidi Cabay for Edwin Parr Award

Ponoka — Wolf Creek Public Schools is proud to announce the nomination of Heidi Cabay for the esteemed Edwin Parr Award for the 2024/2025 school year.

Recognized for her dedication to fostering a safe and caring learning environment, Cabay exemplifies the passion and commitment that the award celebrates. As an educator at Crestomere School, she teaches a diverse range of subjects, including Kindergarten, Physical Education and Wellness (Grades 1/2, 2/3, 5, and 8/9), Grade 7-9 Interventions, and Career and Technology Foundations (CTF) Foods & Sports Performance.

Her journey into education was deeply personal. Growing up in Ponoka, Cabay was inspired by the impact that coaches and teachers had on her life, providing a sense of safety and support during challenging times. Her commitment to trauma-informed education, built through years of advocacy and community involvement, ensures that every student in her classroom feels valued and supported.

“Heidi’s ability to create an inclusive and engaging environment for students is truly remarkable,” said Tim De Ruyck, WCPS Superintendent. “She fosters a love of learning while building strong relationships that positively impact the school and the community. She is a deserving nominee for the Edwin Parr Award.”

Beyond the classroom, Cabay is an active leader in school and community initiatives. She has served as a cross-country, basketball, and badminton coach, a mentor to student referees, and an organizer of community-driven programs like the Crestomere-Mecca Glen Pen Pal initiative. She is also a representative for the ATA, a volunteer for multiple charitable organizations, and a developing athletic director.

“I believe in creating a safe and caring classroom that encompasses the needs of all students through connection, communication, collaboration, creativity, and compassion,” said Cabay. “It is my hope to inspire learners of all ages to create value in all things and grow into the best version of themselves—one step at a time.”

The Edwin Parr Award is annually given to one first-year teacher in each zone of ASBA, who has demonstrated excellence in teaching. Each school division nominates one candidate, and then a committee selects one of the candidates to receive the award for the zone. The Edwin Parr Award recipients are recognized at the ASBA Fall General Meeting.
