Academic vocabulary and content-specific language can be challenging for many English Language Learners, especially in the higher grades when reading comprehension is dependent on word knowledge taken from textbooks. Building academic vocabulary is a major focus in English Second Language (ESL) programming.
English Language Learners in Wolf Creek Public Schools are assessed and monitored using the Alberta K-12 ESL Proficiency Benchmarks. The Benchmarks allow teachers to plan for language instruction and document an English Language Learner’s language proficiency growth over time.
The goals of the ESL program in Wolf Creek Public Schools:
- To help ELLs build a strong language foundation in order to experience success in school.
- To provide assistance for learning English as long as it is required.
- To foster a positive image of the student’s language(s) and culture.
- To introduce the new immigrant learner and his/her family to our school/community.
