Wolf Creek Public Schools joins in celebrating National Indigenous Month

Wolf Creek Public Schools is partnering with Parent Link and the Ponoka Library to plan a National Indigenous Celebration Day on June 21st at 9:30 a.m. at the Centennial Park in Ponoka. The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

This date was chosen because it corresponds to the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and because for generations, many Indigenous Peoples’ groups have celebrated their culture and heritage at this time of year.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is a wonderful opportunity to become better acquainted with the cultural diversity of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, discover the unique accomplishments and celebrate their outstanding contribution to Canadian society. This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and significant accomplishments.

About National Indigenous History Month

In June, Canadians celebrate National Indigenous History Month to honour the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous peoples in Canada. It is also an opportunity to recognize the strength of present-day Indigenous communities.

This year's celebrations are particularly special as National Indigenous History Month marks its 10th anniversary. It follows the passing of a unanimous motion in the House of Commons in 2009, creating what was then known as National Aboriginal History Month.
