Reminder of changes to AP 132 Closure of Schools Due to Inclement Weather

As winter weather could just be around the corner, we would like to remind everyone of important revisions to our administrative procedure AP 132, regarding the Closure of Schools Due to Inclement Weather. These changes have been made to ensure the safety of our students and staff while meeting instructional hours for student learning.

The most important change this year is that in certain circumstances, buses may be canceled but schools could remain open. This is a significant change from past years, where school closures would coincide with bus cancellations. We encourage you to familiarize yourselves with these new procedures as we head into winter.

The revised procedure includes the following key updates, effective September 2024:

  • If the temperature is colder than -40 degrees Celsius (with or without windchill), school buses will not operate, but schools will remain open.
  • If the temperature is colder than -45 degrees Celsius (with or without windchill), both school buses will not operate, and schools will be closed.
  • Dangerous road conditions such as freezing rain or poor visibility may result in the cancellation of buses, but schools could remain open in these instances.
  • On days when schools are closed, staff will have the option to work from home.
  • If schools are closed for three or more days in any semester, one aligned calendar day will be designated as an instructional day. For the 2024-2025 school year, these days are December 13, 2024, and June 6, 2025.

To assist you, we have also created a quick reference info sheet attached to this letter that highlights these key points.

The full revised AP 132 can be accessed online here.
